Ask the Experts: CBD/Hemp Questions to Ask Your Veterinarian

With any new animal healthcare treatment, it can be difficult to know what questions to ask your veterinarian. Only recently have veterinarians received any formal training on CBD and its impacts on the endocannabinoid system, but they are quickly becoming CBD hemp experts. Veterinarians are more aware of its benefits and increasingly carry CBD products in their clinics.

If you are researching CBD and hemp products for your pet, here are some questions to start the conversation with your veterinarian.

Top Questions for Your Veterinarian Experts on CBD/Hemp

Does My Dog Need CBD?

Determining whether your pet will benefit from a CBD supplement can be subjective. Every pet, pet owner, and veterinarian is different. Older dogs, very active dogs, or dogs with nervous tendencies can all benefit from a pet CBD oil or supplement.

Although dogs of all ages can certainly benefit from CBD, obvious signs of discomfort can be an easy place to start. Slow movement, less interest in toys and playing, and not interacting as much with family members or other pets can all be telltale signs of discomfort. If you notice any of these symptoms, it may be a good time to initiate a conversation with your veterinarian.

What are the Benefits of CBD?

Many pet owners are concerned with asking their vet about CBD’s side effects — but what about the benefits? If you or your veterinarian decide CBD may be an option for your pet, what are the expected/potential benefits? CBD supplements and hemp chews for dogs or cats can be used to promote health, calmness, and comfort throughout your pet’s life. Whether your dog is showing signs of joint discomfort or is fearful about being left alone, CBD has an application for each different case. Discuss with your veterinarian and determine what benefits may apply to your dog!

How Does CBD Compare to Traditional Therapy Options?

This question can apply to dogs that may already be taking a prescribed NSAID from your veterinarian or are considering one. Rimadyl would be an example of “traditional” pain medication for dogs. Your veterinarian should be well versed in these medications (and also hopefully a CBD hemp expert) and will be able to talk in-depth about their effectiveness, as well as the potential side effects.

Does CBD Have Side-Effects?

With any supplement or prescribed medication, it is important to understand the potential side effects. ElleVet Sciences’ products have been through several scientific studies and trials, including a safety study published in 2019, and no known negative side effects were found in dogs or cats. However, these results do not apply to CBD products in general, as our products were the only ones used in the studies. So, if your veterinarian recommends and/or carries a product other than ElleVet’s CBD oils and supplements for pets, the side-effect conversation is an important one to have. This may also be a good time to compare vet CBD side-effects versus traditional pain medications.

Always consult your veterinarian or a CBD hemp expert before giving your pet CBD supplements. Veterinarians will help guide your decisions when it comes to your pet’s health and well-being.
