How to Calculate our Soft Gel dosing in Dogs

We talk about mg/kg and we often get questions on how to calculate dosing. Here are the steps to calculate your dog’s weight in kg and how to calculate mg per kg.

Pounds to Kilograms

  1. Take your dog’s weight and divide it by 2.2. For a 70 lb dog you would take 70 and divide by 2.2 to get 31.8
  2. 31.8 equals the number of mg needed for a 1mg/kg dose
  3. Dosing is always twice a day so 31.8 times 2 is the number of mg needed in a day, or 63.6 mg per day
  4. If your dog needs a 2mg per kg dose, then double that number.

Different Doses for Different Applications

The dosing shown on the packaging is the dosing that works best for joint discomfort. For discomfort we recommend the week 1 loading dose of 1.5 mg/kg given in the morning and in the evening for discomfort, and then a maintenance dose of .75mg/kg given morning and night. Many dogs benefit from staying on the week 1 dose, which is very safe to do.

Dosing our CBD Soft Gels for Stress

We recommend a 2mg/kg dose given twice a day everyday, which is what we determined is needed for stress. Stress is variable from dog to dog so we recommend this as a starting dose and if extra relief is needed, contact us to discuss the best dose for your dog. 2mg/kg is about twice the Week 1 loading dose. We can calculate the exact dose for your dog if you give us a call or send us an email!

Dosing our CBD Soft Gels for Itching

Our clinical trial on dogs with Pruritis (itching) showed that a 2mg/kg dose given twice daily is extremely effective for itching. Dogs that did not respond to other products for itching responded extremely well to this dose and this is great news for dogs with environmental allergies! 2mg/kg is about twice the Week 1 loading dose and we are available to help figure out the right dose for your dog. Email or call us anytime!

Dosing our CBD Soft Gels for Cognitive Issues

Cognitive issues cover quite a few areas, and ElleVet works extremely well for dogs experiencing cognitive challenges. Some of these include:

  • Pacing or panting at night
  • Disorientation, often at night
  • Restless sleep
  • Appearing “out of it”, staring at the wall, or isolating himself

There are other cognitive issues that this list but for most, a dose of 2mg/kg given am and pm is very effective and can help your dog tremendously. Seeing senior dogs happy and engaged again means the world to pet owners and to us. Please call or email with questions on calculating the correct dose for your dog!

Dosing our CBD Soft Gels for Palliative Care

It is the most difficult part of having a fur baby, and all we want is to keep them comfortable and happy until the very end. If you dog is at the stage where you are facing end-of-life care, we have found our product help tremendously with quality of life. The starting dose for palliative, or end-of-life care, is 2mg/kg given twice a day, although it can be higher depending on the situation. Please call us and we can talk about what would work best for your pet. 2mg/kg is about twice the week 1 loading dose.

FAQ

What if my dog eats more than they should?

Generally, side effects are minimal, even if your dog eats the whole bag or bottle. If they do eat more than recommended they may be sleepy and/or have soft stools. If your dog experiences any side effects or eats more than they should, we always recommend call your veterinarian.

How often should my dog take the soft gels?

Based on our research on how dogs metabolize our product, twice a day dosing is needed for the best effective. Spacing the dosing about 8-12 hours apart is ideal, and taking with food can improve absorption.

What is the strength / potency of your soft gel oil?

Our Small Dog Soft Gels have 3.8mg of cannabinoids each, Medium Dog Soft Gels have 11mg of cannabinoids each, and Large Dog Soft Gels have 37mg of cannabinoids each. Approximately 90% of those cannabinoids are CBD and CBDA and the rest are smaller but important cannabinoids. There is a full spectrum of cannabinoids and terpenes present in our oil.

How should I store my soft gels?

ElleVet CBD+CBDA soft gel capsules do not need to be refrigerated and should be stored in a cool, dark place out of direct sunlight.

How Science has Shaped ElleVet Products

Science at Work

Why Dosing is so Important

Our Ongoing Research & The Future of CBD + CBDA

The Value of Science

We often say, our products are based on science and data, or everything we do is backed by science, but what does that really mean? It sounds important but it can be hard to relate science and data directly to a pet that is suffering from joint discomfort or a rescue dog who is paralyzed by stress. Science is the heart of what we do, and we never lose sight of the goal of learning for the benefit of pets. Our focus as a company, and the motto that we live by, is “Do what is right for animals and do what is right for our customers.” This motto helps us decide on every research project we undertake.

How Science has Shaped ElleVet Products

Back in 2016 we had what we thought was a great product, but we didn’t know for sure. We spent a year talking to experts in biochemistry, in CBD, in chemistry and to expert growers. We used the information to determine the exact strains of hemp we wanted to use, the formula for our product, and the extraction method. Our careful research allowed us to decide to use 50% CBDA right from the beginning. We were the only company to do this, and now, 5 years later, we have done even more research proving how important that decision was and proving the benefits of CBDA in pets.

Science at Work

Using our specific strain and 50% CBDA made our first clinical trial with Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine an incredible success. To put that a different way, all the dogs in this trial were very old with severe joint discomfort. Several were euthanasia candidates, and this trial was the last ditch effort to help them. Over 80% of these dogs had a dramatic improvement, and one of dogs who was scheduled for euthanasia before the trial lived another 2 years with a great quality of life. That is science at work!

No other company has been able to achieve the success that we have, and to date, no other company has had a successful clinical trial.

Why Dosing is so Important.

Science has also been the reason for our accurate dosing, so let’s talk about dosing.
To put this in perspective, ¼ an aspirin will not help your headache, but an accurate dose will give you relief. The same goes for hemp- the right dose of CBD is needed to help your pet. ElleVet has conducted multiple pharmacokinetic studies and these studies help us learn how different species metabolize our CBD and CBDA, how long it stays in their body and how it is absorbed. With this information, we have been able to determine the best dose for different issues. We know that twice a day dosing is essential for the best effect, and that cats require a higher dose that dogs do. We know that itching and stress require a higher dose than joint discomfort. This knowledge also helped us to create our Calm and Comfort situational use chews for urgent or high stress situations, and that has helped dogs who experience traumatic levels of stress during thunderstorms or veterinary visits, or separation.

Our Ongoing Research & The Future of CBD + CBDA

We currently have 30 different research projects ongoing, in many different areas, and all of them are laser focused on creating new products to help pets, understanding the endocannabinoid system, and learning more about the lesser-known cannabinoids and how they can help pets in different ways. It’s exciting to be at the forefront of a developing industry and we are proud to have led the way in scientific advances. We have been able to partner with Cornell, University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine, Washington State, and many other respected institutions so we can share our knowledge and learn from the best. Together with many of the best veterinarians in the country we are raising the bar on CBD + CBDA products, helping hundreds of thousands of pets, and making the world a better place for animals.

How ElleVet CBD + CBDA Helps Your Pet

Choosing the right hemp

There are any number of products available that have been developed to help pets, and it can be hard to decide which is going to help your pet the most and which is the safest. It comes down to those two criteria and often a pet owner has to make the difficult choice of help over safety. We are changing this, so pets and pet parents can have both safety and extraordinary results.

Hemp CBD + CBDA has made a profound impact on veterinary medicine in the past 5 years and has changed the way veterinarians and pet parents think about managing discomfort, stress, itching, cognition, tremors, and many other issues.   Becoming the first line of defense is what we at ElleVet have as a goal, so that pets can receive the benefit and safety of hemp CBD + CBDA first, and not as a last ditch effort.  We have proven that our CBD + CBDA product works better than so many other, traditional options, and is extremely safe for pets.  We hope ElleVet will soon become the first product that veterinarians reach for, and we believe our research and understanding of cannabinoids and the Endocannabinoid System will help us create better and better products for pets.

The Endocannabinoid System

The endocannabinoid system (ECS)is an important system in the body of every mammal. The ECS is one of the largest receptor system in the body.  It functions both as an immunomodulatory and a neuromodulatory system and is essential for stress recovery as well as maintaining homeostasis in the body, or making sure everything is in balance. There is virtually no physiological or cognitive process that isn’t related in some manner to the ECS.  The ECS is composed of endogenous lipid based signaling molecules which bind to cannabinoid receptors.  The body has many important systems that appear to be affected by “endocannabioid tone” with the most work being done at understanding the endocannabinoids in the central nervous system and the immune systems. Somehow, the endocannabinoid system was unknown, overlooked, and generally not a part of medical or veterinary school curriculum due to a lack of research in clinical patients, which explains why healthcare providers have not taken advantage of the vital role cannabinoids play in maintaining balance in the body.  Simply put, whatever is out of balance, whether it be itching, an inflammatory response, discomfort, cognitive issues, the endocannabinoid system’s job is to address the imbalance and get back to normal. There is still much to be learned about the ECS and the full extent of its role, but understanding the function of the ECS is needed to understand how cannabinoids help to maintain a healthy body and mind.  There are 3 parts to the ECS, which are endocannabinoids make by cells of the body, the receptors that these endocannabinoids bind to and the enzymes that make and degrade these endocannabinoids in the body.

The Functions of the Endocannabinoid System

Perception of discomfort.

The body has a central nervous system and a peripheral nervous system which release excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitters signaling discomfort, tremors and spasticity.  Often when imbalanced there is a preponderance of excitatory neurotransmitter release. The ECS is able to re-balance the release of these excitatory transmissions and therefore reduces the body’s responses.  This is helpful to understand why certain conditions involving spasms respond favorably to cannabinoids.

Inflammatory response

The Endocannabinoid System is able to modulate the inflammatory response by down regulating the production of inflammatory proteins and chemotaxis of inflammatory cytokines by macrophages or mast cells (for example).  Modulating the inflammatory response is important in controlling conditions from joint discomfort to allergic reactions, and countless other circumstances.

Cannabinoids and the Endocannabinoid System

Cannabinoid receptors are G coupled protein receptors found throughout the body and brain, and cannabinoids, particularly the exogenous hemp derived cannabinoid THC will bind with and stimulate these receptors.  The body produces its own cannabinoids, called endocannabinoids, which are the endogenous lipids, anandamide and 2-AG are the primary endocannabinoids Anandamide is also known as the bliss molecule, and these are ligands for the cannabinoid receptors and will activate the receptors in order to maintain tight control of bodily functions.  One example might be that when a body is overheated and sweating begins, that is the ECS regulating temperature.  When Phyto cannabinoids, or cannabinoids from a plant such as hemp, are added, it is bringing in extra help to regulate and rein in whatever is out of balance by further activating the appropriate cannabinoid receptors.  Interestingly, only the proper receptors are activated to address the specific issue, such as overheating, and other functions in the body are not subjected to over stimulation.   This is helpful in understanding how CBD products such as ElleVet, can address multiple issues such as discomfort, stress or cognitive issues.

Cannabinoid Receptors

There are several receptors involved with the ECS, the most well-known of which are CB1 and CB2 receptors, but the TRPV1, GPR55 and PPAR though not traditionally thought to be part of the endocannabinoid system, but are intimately involved in regulation of the endocannabinoid system and are often considered part of the ECS receptor system.  As a whole they are referred to as the endocannabinoidome.  The activation of the endocannabinoidome protects the body from a wide variety of imbalances.

CB1 Receptor

The CB1 receptors are prevalent in the brain but can also be found in organs and tissues in the entire body. Activating the CB1 receptor is important as it suppresses neuronal excitability and the reduction of neurotransmitter release.  It regulates processes such as those associated with inflammation, discomfort, memory, and appetite.  CB1 receptor signaling is thought to be important in extinction of aversive memories.

CB2

CB2 receptors are expressed in the immune system, the gastrointestinal system and blood cells. They appear to mediate cytokine release and perform immunomodulatory functions.  When these are activated, they are effective at managing neuropathic discomfort, peripheral inflammatory responses and sensitization.

TRPV

TRPV (transient receptor potential) or vanilloid receptors are primarily located in the nociceptive neurons of the peripheral nervous system and regulates body temperature and has an important role in pain signaling.

PPAR

PPAR (peroxisome proliferation activation receptors) are a unique receptor found primarily in immune cells that are very sensitive to CBD and CBDA.  When activated these receptors can help down regulate inflammatory cytokines which are a significant part of regulation of the immune response of certain white blood cells involved in the inflammatory response.

Enzymes

The third component of the ECS, along with endocannabinoids and receptors, are enzymes.  Enzymes function to breakdown Anandamide and 2-AG so that overstimulation of the receptors does not occur, therefore assisting in maintaining balance.  However, CBD, or cannabidiol can inhibit anandamide breakdown by inhibiting the enzyme FAAH, or fatty acid amidohydrolase, which in turn can prolong and enhance its positive effects.

ECS Tone

ECS tone is essentially the baseline level of endocannabinoids (anandamide and 2-AG) in the body and the density and functioning of the cannabinoid receptors.  When an ECS is working optimally, the body is in a state of physical and emotional balance, and when it is overactive or underactive, and therefore out of balance, the body reacts accordingly.  An overactive ECS could manifest in inflammation, obesity, or diabetes.  An underactive ECS can manifest as more severe IBS, migraines, or mood imbalance for example.  Therefore the tone, or the baseline state of health and balance of the ECS itself is a key to good health and wellbeing, and has become a subject of great interest in terms of both addressing existing issues and boosting healthy “ECS tone” with daily intake of cannabinoids.

CBD and ECS Tone Support

In theory, taking CBD + CBDA daily would exercise the ECS and help create a healthy baseline or tone.  Physical exercise and other positive lifestyle choices are thought to boost ECS tone, and it would make sense that taking CBD daily would achieve the same type of effect.  Daily CBD as a prophylactic measure is gaining popularity as the idea of helping the ECS to prevent conditions before they manifest is appealing.  It is an area of great potential although further research is needed to determine the efficacy of this approach and the appropriate dosing.  Would putting a younger dog on a moderate dose of CBD + CBDA daily help to keep them happy and healthy longer?  Many pet owners believe so and any young dog with stress or itching that use CBD + CBDA already could see long term benefits in other areas which is an exciting new avenue of exploration in veterinary medicine.

Terpenes

Terpenes are compounds found in hemp along with cannabinoids. Terpenes are mainly known for their scent, as they are what causes the distinctive hemp smell, although they are also responsible for other scents like lavender, hops, citrus, or pine.  However, terpenes contribute more to hemp than just smell.  They have potential anti-inflammatory properties, calming properties and can aid in sleep, respiration, and many other areas, so they are an important part of a full spectrum CBD + CBDA product.   A good product will have a robust terpene profile, and the terpenes and cannabinoids work together in a synergistic way called the entourage effect.  The entourage effect is essentially that each individual part is enhanced by the sum of the parts.  Some of the most abundant terpenes are

  • Myrcene– the terpene usually presents in the largest quantity; it is known for its anti-inflammatory properties. It is also volatile, and care needs to be taken during the extraction process so that it doesn’t evaporate.
  • Limonene– as the name indicated, it has a lemony smell and is often used in cleaning or cosmetic products. It is known for its calming properties.
  • Alpha pinene– a pine tree smell and known for anti-inflammatory properties and for respiratory relief
  • Beta caryophyllene-a peppery smell, this terpene is known for anti-stress and anti-inflammatory properties
  • Humulene-an earthy smell and is also found in hops. This is thought to aid in memory and memory retention.
  • Linalool– this terpene is best known for its hemp smell and is also known for its calming and sedative properties

Terpenes are an important part of a good CBD + CBDA product and a strong smell, even if your pet might not appreciate it, can indicate a high quality product!  Currently, we have little evidence that the amounts found in CBD products have true clinical effects, but more importantly, besides the potential entourage effects, these terpenes act as natural antioxidants in our products to help with maintaining long shelf life of our products.

How ElleVet CBD + CBDA helps your pet

There are complex explanations about the Endocannabinoid System, about the different components of the ECS and how your pets body responds to CBD, and many other scientific explanations regarding the use of CBD + CBDA.  As a pet owner, what you really want to know if CBD + CBDA is going to work for your pet, if is safe for your pet and why it should be the product that you choose over all the other options.

When your senior pet is uncomfortable due to age related joint issues, mental decline and also has musculoskeletal problems like tremors you know your dog is uncomfortable and not experiencing a good quality of life.   His endocannabinoid system is trying to address these issues and bring his body back to a state of comfort and balance but is unable to achieve this.  You go to your veterinarian to discuss options to make your pet comfortable and happy, and she might suggest several different products to address his multiple issues, which come with potentially serious side effects and may or may not work.  Your veterinarian also suggests taking ElleVet full spectrum CBD + CBDA which has been proven safe and proven to work in clinical trials. You decide to give your pet our recommended dose.  Immediately the CBD + CBDA activates the ECS receptors in his body and his ECS is now able to lessen the perception of discomfort, lessen the excitatory process that causes tremors, improve mental acuity and able to down regulate the inflammatory response so your pet feels much better. This all occurs so quickly that in a matter of 2-5 days you see a noticeable improvement in comfort, in happiness and overall quality of life without side effects.  It’s science, it’s not magic, and your dog is suddenly bounding up the stairs or brings an old toy out to play that you have not seen in years.  This is because we have spent nearly 5 years on research to make sure your dog is getting the optimal dose, proper frequency of administration and combination of cannabinoids and terpenes to give your dog a happy and healthy life, because we think all pets deserve the best.

My dog Gumbo is 8 years old and has discomfort in her knees and hips. The Ellevet products have really improved her comfort and mobility! I enjoy these new soft gels because I do not have to put the dose into a capsule myself. The softgels do not have a noticeable smell and it does not seem to have a strong taste because it is easy to give to my dog.

These are PERFECT for my dog. She’s a picky eater and refused a lot of the other CBD treats I had tried. Oil is messy as well. The only thing she will eat all the time is cheese and these are SO easy to hide in cheese!

My pup needs a higher dose of CBD than most CBD treats recommend. This is a great product for doing that without having to give her 10 treats a day to get the right dose. HIGHLY recommend their products they’re cost effective and vet recommended!

We first started using ElleVet’s CBD oil on our 14 year old Husky Justice James. It came recommended by our vet. It truly was a game changer! Justice could not get up off the floor w/out his legs sliding out from under him. His back legs had become stiff, weak and he was in discomfort. After taking the CBD oil for 2 months… Justice started getting up on his own. He did not have the same discomfort and his stiffness had subsided. Then we tried using it on our 11 year old Husky Blue, his joints were stiff. ElleVet’s CBD oil capsules have helped him move around better and you can tell he is calmer! Thank you ElleVet for this amazing product!

I’ve been giving my dog Kenya ElleVet’s CBD oil for almost two years. This great product was recommended by my vet and she responds very well to it. I love that they now have the soft gels. So much easier. I cover them with peanut butter and she takes them effortlessly. I’m very comfortable giving ElleVet products to my dog. I also have to say the customer service is exceptional. They are very helpful, knowledgeable and friendly any time I call with questions. I cannot say enough good things about this company or this product.

The ElleVet products have been a godsend for my old gal Sundance. She was having such a hard time getting up and was not able to fully enjoy her walks due to her joint discomfort. Once she started the ElleVet products, I noticed a big difference. She even runs a little – which she would never do before. She has more pep in her step and is a happy girl!

My 13 year old German shepherd became picky about his Ellevet chewable CBD. The gel capsules are easy to put into his food and he takes them readily. Thanks for putting the pep back in my dog’s step. He can keep up with the younger dogs now which means he goes on every walk we take!

My 7 year old Chloe suffers from awful stress, joint discomfort and skin allergies. The vet had recommended I try this after we were there for allergies. This stuff is amazing! 3 weeks after taking it and she’s galloping around the yard, hopping the baby gate that she’s not supposed to, slowly loosing the excess weight. The pill is easy to give her. I just slip it in peanut butter and she takes it right away. This is a must have for all pet owners. I’m hooked and will be giving her this daily!

  20. Jennifer Maggart (verified owner) Rated 5 out of 5

Our vet recommended we try using the soft gels for my 15 yo Lhasa Apso who is starting to slow down due to arthritis. She also takes a prescription pain reliever daily. It is actually obvious shortly after she takes her CBD gel because she runs & jumps around like when she was a pup! If we had to choose between the 2 medications, it would be ellevet softgels no question. I’m so grateful for this product!!!

  21. SHELBY WILDER (verified owner) Rated 5 out of 5

Our vet recommended getting CBD soft gels for our 9-year-old French Bulldog when we noticed some spinal disc disease happening. He began losing control over his hind legs and was very sensitive with his back. I was honestly giving up hope until I found this product, it was literally a night and day difference. He immediately started being in less pain, more mobile, and less tense in his lower back. If he stops taking CBD soft gels, within a few days he starts to lose his mobility, so our little dude is on these for life and we’re just grateful to have found something that works.
