The Brief History of Hemp & CBD for Pets

ElleVet Dog Happy Outside

How did we get here, and what does the future hold?

The history of hemp dates back thousands of years.

Hemp has been used for making clothes, food, remedies, and more for centuries. Extracting CBD from hemp, however, is a relatively new practice. With the majority of federal and state laws now favoring hemp farming, manufacturing, and sale, there has been a meteoric rise in the size and scale of the hemp CBD industry. This includes a loosening of hemp regulations and increased use of hemp for pet relief CBD.

A History of Hemp: When was CBD discovered?

The CBD cannabinoid was first discovered in 1940. Throughout the 1960s, the effects of cannabinoids were researched in the United States and tested on animals, including mice and primates. In 1970, however, the Controlled Substances Act was passed, criminalizing the possession, production, and use of all forms of cannabis. Strict laws inhibited scientists and researchers from exploring the plant further, diminishing the potential for further studies on humans and animals. As hemp laws and technology have advanced, so has our knowledge of the CBD cannabinoid and its effect on the endocannabinoid system of humans and animals.

Clinical trials & studies

Although pet relief CBD and hemp products for pets seem to be everywhere you look, there has been little pet-specific research completed. To date, the only published studies in the history of hemp-derived CBD in dogs have been conducted by Colorado State University and Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine using ElleVet Sciences CBD+CBDA.

ElleVet Sciences has played a significant role in the study of hemp pet relief CBD products in pets.

First, we participated in a pharmacokinetic and clinical trial at Cornell University which used our CBD oil for pets on dogs with osteoarthritis. The results were astounding, with over 80% of dogs showing a significant response. The study — a first of its kind — was published in 2018. Along with our study at Cornell, we also completed and published a safety study in 2019. This groundbreaking study examines long-term safety, specifically the safety of ElleVet’s cannabinoid and terpene oil blend in dogs and cats. No known negative side-effects were found in either species, and our CBD products for cats and dogs were determined safe for both short and long-term use.

The future of CBD+CBDA for pets

The history of hemp-derived CBD is expanding as it seems CBD+CBDA in the animal health field is here to stay. At ElleVet, it is our responsibility to ensure that any possible benefits of this cannabinoid are researched and proven. More studies and information will ultimately lead to more effective CBDA+CBD pet relief solutions.

While the potential benefits of CBD for pets are ever-growing, at ElleVet we insist that scientific research is necessary to support any benefits. We have funded four more clinical studies to further emphasize the importance of scientific testing and evidence-based results.

The studies are being conducted at multiple sites, including well-known universities and hospitals. These studies are ongoing, and will focus on the following areas:

  • Oncology
  • Seizure
  • Post-operative TPLO
  • Dermatology

In addition to these upcoming studies, ElleVet has formed an advisory board consisting of industry-leading veterinarians. The support of these renowned veterinarians will further advance ElleVet CBD+CBDA products and ultimately help more pets in need.
