How to Choose the Right CBD for Your Pet

Reviewed by: Dr. David Tittle,BVetMed, CertVA, GPCert (WVA&CPM), MRCVS

We want nothing more than to have our pets happy and act like their old selves with peace of mind that they are not being harmed by the products we give them. With so many hemp and CBD products out there claiming to work for a variety of conditions, how do you know which one you should choose?

Pet owners today have more options than ever when it comes to choosing wellness supplements, including products made with hemp-derived CBD. But with so many brands, formulas, and claims in the marketplace, it can be challenging to know which products are truly trustworthy and which may fall short of your expectations.

A thoughtful, research-driven approach can help you find a product that aligns with your pet’s needs while giving you confidence in what you’re bringing into their daily routine.

The goal of this guide is to help you understand what to look for and how to evaluate the quality behind a CBD product. By focusing on research, transparency, and pet-friendly formulation practices, you can make a well-informed decision that supports your dog or cat’s overall wellbeing.

Why Choosing the Right CBD Matters

Not all CBD pet products are created with the same level of precision or testing. Two bottles may appear similar, but the quality of ingredients, the concentration of cannabinoids, and the scientific foundation behind the formulation can vary widely.

High-quality CBD supplements are developed with intentionally selected, research-based ingredients with consistency you can trust. Lower-quality products, on the other hand, may offer unclear labeling, inconsistent batches, or unsupported claims.

Choosing the right product ultimately comes down to trust: trust in the brand, trust in the science behind the formula, and trust that the supplement aligns with your pet’s wellness needs. Below are key criteria to guide your search.

Look for Third-Party Lab Testing

Just because a label, commercial, or website mentions some great results for a particular CBD or hemp product does not mean the results are verifiable, accurate, or unbiased.

Independent lab testing is one of the most important indicators of product quality. A reputable company will provide a third-party Certificate of Analysis (COA) for each product, showing the exact cannabinoid profile and confirming that the product has been tested for contaminants such as heavy metals, solvents, or microbial impurities.

Check to see if one (or more) has been performed on the products you are looking at and ask the manufacturer if the Certificate of Analysis is available upon request.

Third-party testing also verifies that the product contains the amount of CBD listed on the label. This transparency allows you to make an informed choice and helps ensure consistency from one batch to the next.

Check for Research Conducted by Universities or Accredited Institutions

Brands committed to scientific integrity often partner with veterinarians or academic institutions to evaluate how their formulas perform. While research on pet CBD is still growing, products backed by credible studies stand out because they have been evaluated in real-world settings with well-defined methodologies.

If a product has undergone clinical or pharmacokinetic research, that indicates the company has invested in understanding how dogs and cats process the supplement and how to optimize its use. Asking whether the brand collaborates with veterinary professionals or academic researchers can help you identify reputable options.

Look for Safety and Tolerance Data

In addition to whether the CBD/hemp product helps your pet, the product should be tested to make sure it is safe for dogs and cats.

CBD affects dogs and cats differently, which makes species-specific testing especially valuable. Pharmacokinetic and safety studies help determine how specific species metabolize cannabinoids and what administration instructions align with typical use. Brands that have invested in tolerance or long-term use studies demonstrate a commitment to responsible formulation.

When evaluating a product, check whether the company discusses any research related to safety, metabolism, or administration guidelines for different species.

Choose Products with Clear Administration Instructions

Just because hemp and CBD are naturally occurring compounds does not mean that a pet can be given any amount. Trustworthy CBD products for pets provide clear, weight and support-based guidance on their packaging. While CBD is naturally derived, more is not always better.

Giving the correct amount is key to supporting the supplement’s intended benefits. Use products that provide straightforward instructions and encourage pet owners to consult their veterinarian before starting anything new.

Evaluate Brand Transparency and Customer Support

It would be naive for a CBD or hemp product manufacturer to think that their relationship with the pet owner should end once they buy the product. The relationship between a pet owner and a CBD brand should feel collaborative.

Reputable companies offer accessible customer service, knowledgeable support teams, and educational resources to help you feel confident in your decision. Whether you have questions about administration, formulation, or research, a high-quality brand makes it easy to get answers.

Is there an FAQ section on their website? Is a phone number available? Knowledgeable support staff can make a big difference in making you feel good about the choices you make when it comes to caring for your pets. Transparency is a strong indicator of quality.

Consider Whether Veterinarians Recommend the Product

Veterinarians play a central role in your pet’s overall health and wellbeing, making their guidance especially valuable when selecting supplements. Products recommended or carried by veterinary professionals typically meet higher standards for clinical research, consistency, formulation, and transparency.

Before introducing any CBD product into your pet’s routine, it’s always best to check in with your veterinarian. Many brands also offer educational materials or direct support to veterinary teams, which can be another sign of credibility. Are the products you are looking to give your pet ones that your veterinarian carries, recommends, or is perhaps using with their own pets?

Choosing a Pet CBD Product You Trust

Remember, not all hemp and CBD are the same. Pet CBD products can be made with full-spectrum hemp extract, broad-spectrum extract, or CBD isolate. Each option has a different composition of cannabinoids and beneficial plant compounds.

There could be 10 different bottles on a shelf labeled “CBD oil,” and each oil can have a very different effect on pets. That’s where the proper research, testing, information sharing, and support staff come in.

It’s not just bottling CBD oil, putting a label on it, and selling it that makes a good product. A company that has done the work to scientifically test the efficacy, safety, and consistency of their products adds an important layer of trust for pet parents choosing a product for their dog or cat.

As pet parents, we’ll all do anything to help our best friends feel better. By keeping these checkpoints in mind as you research which products to buy for your pet, you will be making an informed purchasing decision.
