What if my dog eats more than they should?

Generally, side effects are minimal, even if your dog eats the whole bag or bottle. If they do eat more than recommended they may be sleepy and/or have soft stools. If your dog experiences any side effects or eats more than they should we always recommend calling your veterinarian.

Can I use Calm & Comfort chews in addition to your other products?

Yes, you can use Calm & Comfort chews for situational stress even if your dog is also taking another ElleVet product on a daily basis. It can provide great extra support for highly stressful situations or days when your dog is extra active. We would recommend you not exceed 2 doses of Calm & Comfort in a 24 period in this case.

How often can I use Calm and Comfort chews?

We recommend not exceeding 2 doses of Calm & Comfort chews in a 24 hour period

My dog is anxious all the time, is this the right product for them?

Calm & Comfort chews are intended for urgent, situational use. If your dog is experiencing a chronic issue our oil, soft gels, or mobility chews would be a better choice. Please call us if you are not sure which product to order!

What is the strength / potency of Calm and Comfort chews?

Our Calm & Comfort Chews have 46mg of cannabinoids each. Approximately 90% of those cannabinoids are CBD and CBDA and the rest are smaller but also important cannabinoids. There is a full spectrum of cannabinoids and terpenes present in each product.

What does Proprietary Complete-Spectrum Cannabinoids Blend mean?

This means that the hemp we use is a strain developed specifically for us and grown just for us. No one else uses the same hemp we do and ours is the only hemp proven to work. Our oil is called complete spectrum because it contains all the cannabinoids and compounds available in the plant which all work together for the greatest effect.

How should I store my chews?

ElleVet Calm & Comfort chews do not need to be refrigerated and should be stored in a cool, dark place, out of direct sunlight.

Our Ongoing Research & The Future of CBD + CBDA

The Value of Science

We often say, our products are based on science and data, or everything we do is backed by science, but what does that really mean? It sounds important but it can be hard to relate science and data directly to a pet that is suffering from joint discomfort or a rescue dog who is paralyzed by stress. Science is the heart of what we do, and we never lose sight of the goal of learning for the benefit of pets. Our focus as a company, and the motto that we live by, is “Do what is right for animals and do what is right for our customers.” This motto helps us decide on every research project we undertake.

How Science has Shaped ElleVet Products

Back in 2016 we had what we thought was a great product, but we didn’t know for sure. We spent a year talking to experts in biochemistry, in CBD, in chemistry and to expert growers. We used the information to determine the exact strains of hemp we wanted to use, the formula for our product, and the extraction method. Our careful research allowed us to decide to use 50% CBDA right from the beginning. We were the only company to do this, and now, 5 years later, we have done even more research proving how important that decision was and proving the benefits of CBDA in pets.

Science at Work

Using our specific strain and 50% CBDA made our first clinical trial with Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine an incredible success. To put that a different way, all the dogs in this trial were very old with severe joint discomfort. Several were euthanasia candidates, and this trial was the last ditch effort to help them. Over 80% of these dogs had a dramatic improvement, and one of dogs who was scheduled for euthanasia before the trial lived another 2 years with a great quality of life. That is science at work!

No other company has been able to achieve the success that we have, and to date, no other company has had a successful clinical trial.

Why Dosing is so Important.

Science has also been the reason for our accurate dosing, so let’s talk about dosing.
To put this in perspective, ¼ an aspirin will not help your headache, but an accurate dose will give you relief. The same goes for hemp- the right dose of CBD is needed to help your pet. ElleVet has conducted multiple pharmacokinetic studies and these studies help us learn how different species metabolize our CBD and CBDA, how long it stays in their body and how it is absorbed. With this information, we have been able to determine the best dose for different issues. We know that twice a day dosing is essential for the best effect, and that cats require a higher dose that dogs do. We know that itching and stress require a higher dose than joint discomfort. This knowledge also helped us to create our Calm and Comfort situational use chews for urgent or high stress situations, and that has helped dogs who experience traumatic levels of stress during thunderstorms or veterinary visits, or separation.

Our Ongoing Research & The Future of CBD + CBDA

We currently have 30 different research projects ongoing, in many different areas, and all of them are laser focused on creating new products to help pets, understanding the endocannabinoid system, and learning more about the lesser-known cannabinoids and how they can help pets in different ways. It’s exciting to be at the forefront of a developing industry and we are proud to have led the way in scientific advances. We have been able to partner with Cornell, University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine, Washington State, and many other respected institutions so we can share our knowledge and learn from the best. Together with many of the best veterinarians in the country we are raising the bar on CBD + CBDA products, helping hundreds of thousands of pets, and making the world a better place for animals.

How ElleVet CBD + CBDA Helps Your Pet

Choosing the right hemp

There are any number of products available that have been developed to help pets, and it can be hard to decide which is going to help your pet the most and which is the safest. It comes down to those two criteria and often a pet owner has to make the difficult choice of help over safety. We are changing this, so pets and pet parents can have both safety and extraordinary results.

Hemp CBD + CBDA has made a profound impact on veterinary medicine in the past 5 years and has changed the way veterinarians and pet parents think about managing discomfort, stress, itching, cognition, tremors, and many other issues.   Becoming the first line of defense is what we at ElleVet have as a goal, so that pets can receive the benefit and safety of hemp CBD + CBDA first, and not as a last ditch effort.  We have proven that our CBD + CBDA product works better than so many other, traditional options, and is extremely safe for pets.  We hope ElleVet will soon become the first product that veterinarians reach for, and we believe our research and understanding of cannabinoids and the Endocannabinoid System will help us create better and better products for pets.

The Endocannabinoid System

The endocannabinoid system (ECS)is an important system in the body of every mammal. The ECS is one of the largest receptor system in the body.  It functions both as an immunomodulatory and a neuromodulatory system and is essential for stress recovery as well as maintaining homeostasis in the body, or making sure everything is in balance. There is virtually no physiological or cognitive process that isn’t related in some manner to the ECS.  The ECS is composed of endogenous lipid based signaling molecules which bind to cannabinoid receptors.  The body has many important systems that appear to be affected by “endocannabioid tone” with the most work being done at understanding the endocannabinoids in the central nervous system and the immune systems. Somehow, the endocannabinoid system was unknown, overlooked, and generally not a part of medical or veterinary school curriculum due to a lack of research in clinical patients, which explains why healthcare providers have not taken advantage of the vital role cannabinoids play in maintaining balance in the body.  Simply put, whatever is out of balance, whether it be itching, an inflammatory response, discomfort, cognitive issues, the endocannabinoid system’s job is to address the imbalance and get back to normal. There is still much to be learned about the ECS and the full extent of its role, but understanding the function of the ECS is needed to understand how cannabinoids help to maintain a healthy body and mind.  There are 3 parts to the ECS, which are endocannabinoids make by cells of the body, the receptors that these endocannabinoids bind to and the enzymes that make and degrade these endocannabinoids in the body.

The Functions of the Endocannabinoid System

Perception of discomfort.

The body has a central nervous system and a peripheral nervous system which release excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitters signaling discomfort, tremors and spasticity.  Often when imbalanced there is a preponderance of excitatory neurotransmitter release. The ECS is able to re-balance the release of these excitatory transmissions and therefore reduces the body’s responses.  This is helpful to understand why certain conditions involving spasms respond favorably to cannabinoids.

Inflammatory response

The Endocannabinoid System is able to modulate the inflammatory response by down regulating the production of inflammatory proteins and chemotaxis of inflammatory cytokines by macrophages or mast cells (for example).  Modulating the inflammatory response is important in controlling conditions from joint discomfort to allergic reactions, and countless other circumstances.

Cannabinoids and the Endocannabinoid System

Cannabinoid receptors are G coupled protein receptors found throughout the body and brain, and cannabinoids, particularly the exogenous hemp derived cannabinoid THC will bind with and stimulate these receptors.  The body produces its own cannabinoids, called endocannabinoids, which are the endogenous lipids, anandamide and 2-AG are the primary endocannabinoids Anandamide is also known as the bliss molecule, and these are ligands for the cannabinoid receptors and will activate the receptors in order to maintain tight control of bodily functions.  One example might be that when a body is overheated and sweating begins, that is the ECS regulating temperature.  When Phyto cannabinoids, or cannabinoids from a plant such as hemp, are added, it is bringing in extra help to regulate and rein in whatever is out of balance by further activating the appropriate cannabinoid receptors.  Interestingly, only the proper receptors are activated to address the specific issue, such as overheating, and other functions in the body are not subjected to over stimulation.   This is helpful in understanding how CBD products such as ElleVet, can address multiple issues such as discomfort, stress or cognitive issues.

Cannabinoid Receptors

There are several receptors involved with the ECS, the most well-known of which are CB1 and CB2 receptors, but the TRPV1, GPR55 and PPAR though not traditionally thought to be part of the endocannabinoid system, but are intimately involved in regulation of the endocannabinoid system and are often considered part of the ECS receptor system.  As a whole they are referred to as the endocannabinoidome.  The activation of the endocannabinoidome protects the body from a wide variety of imbalances.

CB1 Receptor

The CB1 receptors are prevalent in the brain but can also be found in organs and tissues in the entire body. Activating the CB1 receptor is important as it suppresses neuronal excitability and the reduction of neurotransmitter release.  It regulates processes such as those associated with inflammation, discomfort, memory, and appetite.  CB1 receptor signaling is thought to be important in extinction of aversive memories.

CB2 receptors are expressed in the immune system, the gastrointestinal system and blood cells. They appear to mediate cytokine release and perform immunomodulatory functions.  When these are activated, they are effective at managing neuropathic discomfort, peripheral inflammatory responses and sensitization.

TRPV (transient receptor potential) or vanilloid receptors are primarily located in the nociceptive neurons of the peripheral nervous system and regulates body temperature and has an important role in pain signaling.

PPAR (peroxisome proliferation activation receptors) are a unique receptor found primarily in immune cells that are very sensitive to CBD and CBDA.  When activated these receptors can help down regulate inflammatory cytokines which are a significant part of regulation of the immune response of certain white blood cells involved in the inflammatory response.

The third component of the ECS, along with endocannabinoids and receptors, are enzymes.  Enzymes function to breakdown Anandamide and 2-AG so that overstimulation of the receptors does not occur, therefore assisting in maintaining balance.  However, CBD, or cannabidiol can inhibit anandamide breakdown by inhibiting the enzyme FAAH, or fatty acid amidohydrolase, which in turn can prolong and enhance its positive effects.

ECS Tone

ECS tone is essentially the baseline level of endocannabinoids (anandamide and 2-AG) in the body and the density and functioning of the cannabinoid receptors.  When an ECS is working optimally, the body is in a state of physical and emotional balance, and when it is overactive or underactive, and therefore out of balance, the body reacts accordingly.  An overactive ECS could manifest in inflammation, obesity, or diabetes.  An underactive ECS can manifest as more severe IBS, migraines, or mood imbalance for example.  Therefore the tone, or the baseline state of health and balance of the ECS itself is a key to good health and wellbeing, and has become a subject of great interest in terms of both addressing existing issues and boosting healthy “ECS tone” with daily intake of cannabinoids.

CBD and ECS Tone Support

In theory, taking CBD + CBDA daily would exercise the ECS and help create a healthy baseline or tone.  Physical exercise and other positive lifestyle choices are thought to boost ECS tone, and it would make sense that taking CBD daily would achieve the same type of effect.  Daily CBD as a prophylactic measure is gaining popularity as the idea of helping the ECS to prevent conditions before they manifest is appealing.  It is an area of great potential although further research is needed to determine the efficacy of this approach and the appropriate dosing.  Would putting a younger dog on a moderate dose of CBD + CBDA daily help to keep them happy and healthy longer?  Many pet owners believe so and any young dog with stress or itching that use CBD + CBDA already could see long term benefits in other areas which is an exciting new avenue of exploration in veterinary medicine.

Terpenes are compounds found in hemp along with cannabinoids. Terpenes are mainly known for their scent, as they are what causes the distinctive hemp smell, although they are also responsible for other scents like lavender, hops, citrus, or pine.  However, terpenes contribute more to hemp than just smell.  They have potential anti-inflammatory properties, calming properties and can aid in sleep, respiration, and many other areas, so they are an important part of a full spectrum CBD + CBDA product.   A good product will have a robust terpene profile, and the terpenes and cannabinoids work together in a synergistic way called the entourage effect.  The entourage effect is essentially that each individual part is enhanced by the sum of the parts.  Some of the most abundant terpenes are

  • Myrcene– the terpene usually presents in the largest quantity; it is known for its anti-inflammatory properties. It is also volatile, and care needs to be taken during the extraction process so that it doesn’t evaporate.
  • Limonene– as the name indicated, it has a lemony smell and is often used in cleaning or cosmetic products. It is known for its calming properties.
  • Alpha pinene– a pine tree smell and known for anti-inflammatory properties and for respiratory relief
  • Beta caryophyllene-a peppery smell, this terpene is known for anti-stress and anti-inflammatory properties
  • Humulene-an earthy smell and is also found in hops. This is thought to aid in memory and memory retention.
  • Linalool– this terpene is best known for its hemp smell and is also known for its calming and sedative properties

Terpenes are an important part of a good CBD + CBDA product and a strong smell, even if your pet might not appreciate it, can indicate a high quality product!  Currently, we have little evidence that the amounts found in CBD products have true clinical effects, but more importantly, besides the potential entourage effects, these terpenes act as natural antioxidants in our products to help with maintaining long shelf life of our products.

How ElleVet CBD + CBDA helps your pet

There are complex explanations about the Endocannabinoid System, about the different components of the ECS and how your pets body responds to CBD, and many other scientific explanations regarding the use of CBD + CBDA.  As a pet owner, what you really want to know if CBD + CBDA is going to work for your pet, if is safe for your pet and why it should be the product that you choose over all the other options.

When your senior pet is uncomfortable due to age related joint issues, mental decline and also has musculoskeletal problems like tremors you know your dog is uncomfortable and not experiencing a good quality of life.   His endocannabinoid system is trying to address these issues and bring his body back to a state of comfort and balance but is unable to achieve this.  You go to your veterinarian to discuss options to make your pet comfortable and happy, and she might suggest several different products to address his multiple issues, which come with potentially serious side effects and may or may not work.  Your veterinarian also suggests taking ElleVet full spectrum CBD + CBDA which has been proven safe and proven to work in clinical trials. You decide to give your pet our recommended dose.  Immediately the CBD + CBDA activates the ECS receptors in his body and his ECS is now able to lessen the perception of discomfort, lessen the excitatory process that causes tremors, improve mental acuity and able to down regulate the inflammatory response so your pet feels much better. This all occurs so quickly that in a matter of 2-5 days you see a noticeable improvement in comfort, in happiness and overall quality of life without side effects.  It’s science, it’s not magic, and your dog is suddenly bounding up the stairs or brings an old toy out to play that you have not seen in years.  This is because we have spent nearly 5 years on research to make sure your dog is getting the optimal dose, proper frequency of administration and combination of cannabinoids and terpenes to give your dog a happy and healthy life, because we think all pets deserve the best.

These are the most effective products for the most stressful times. This year has been super stressful for all but these chews are so great for my Aussies. They truly relax with these and it is so reassuring. The customer service call I had to discuss how to use these in conjunction with other supplements was so helpful. 5 stars all around. Thank you so much for the great products.

Ive been recommending these to all my clients with dogs who have stress, especially related to travel. These products can make a very difficult trip so much easier. If you’re looking to deal with car stress, vet stress, or even just holiday upheaval, these are the products for you!

We have 3 Jack Russells who get very stressed and howl loudly when we leave, and we have neighbors in close proximity who get disturbed by it. We have tried other calming products with no success. I tried these chews right when I got an email that they were a new product as I know they are high quality ingredients and from a trusted source (Ellevet). All 3 dogs were quickly calmed with these chews and were not even bothered by 4th of July fireworks! They sat with us instead of hiding and shaking under the bed. I am amazed and will continue to buy them! I have referred them to all of my family and friends who have dogs!

Mac was so much more calm during grooming with the help of Calm and Comfort Chews. I’ll be ordering more.

My 13 year old blind Yorkiepoo suddenly developed a bad case of separation stress – pacing, panting, peeing and pooing in the house while my husband and I were at work. We tried a couple of options from our vet, didn’t work. I’d heard a lot of good things about CBD, so I asked our vet. Our vet recommended ElleVet, saying it was the only company she knew of that had successful clinical trials. So we decided to try Calm and Comfort Chews. They worked like a charm – calmed our dog down so there was no pacing, panting, peeing or pooing – and no side effects! (Which in turn calmed my stress too! LOL) We have a family member who has a dog with a terrible fear of thunderstorms. Nothing worked for her dog either, so we recommended Calm and Comfort Chews. They worked for her dog too – she was super impressed and so thankful that her dog was able to lie calmly on the floor during a storm instead of running around losing his mind! Love Calm and Comfort Chews!

My girl Izzie has developed increasing stress with thunderstorms and fireworks. She has her calming shirt and we have tried other options but I kept wishing she could have more relief. The calm and comfort chews definitely helped so she would sit shaking or find the smallest darkest place to hide. We will be so grateful to have these to help her get through the New Years fireworks this year!

We have been searching for something for our golden-doodle who has severe stress when riding in a car. We tried all sorts of ideas but riding with him in a car was becoming dangerous. We tried these chews and had the best result with no side effects.

Our dog couldn’t settle at night to sleep for even 5-10 minutes at a time, this had been going on for months, first 2 nights taking a half of a bone, he slept through the night, so far it’s been a miracle for us

My 10 year old Maltese developed digestive issues and went blind last year, and since then has developed severe stress when going to doggie day care, boarding and grooming – really being away from home or around other dogs. The result was confusion, diarrhea and vomiting for several days after to the point where it would become debilitating. My vet recommended I try these chews and they have worked wonders! I give him a dose the morning of the activity/event and he remains alert and calm – if needed I give him another dose the day after which seem to help with the stomach issues. I am so happy to have found this product!

As veterinarians we want to recommend a product we trust with proven science and effectiveness. The Calm and Comfort Chews are exceptional in alleviating short term stress events and most dogs are happy to take them too.

The Calm and Comfort chews have been the only thing that has helped our Golden Retriever deal with travel and fireworks. We have tried everything, but they came with side effects and were effective only 50% of the time.

It’s the night before the 4th of July, fireworks are all around! Normally my husky is panting, pacing, and shaking. She is currently resting peacefully on our bedroom floor. A little mild panting here and there. Thank goodness for some relief for her (and me)!

  14. Sara Rothrock (verified owner) Rated 5 out of 5

This seems to work. I’m somewhat skeptical of products that have universally good reviews, but these calm & comfort chews truly seem to be worthwhile. Our pup has a tough case of shaking and additional stress can be a trigger for more shaking. We were very concerned about the fourth of July. The night rolled around, the fireworks began, and it became clear she was very agitated, shaking and pacing. We gave her a dose of the chews and it really did mellow her out. She still got up to pace intermittently but the shaking stopped and she even fell asleep for short periods. Best of all, no shaking events that night. We will be buying more.

I’ve tried everything on the market to calm my dogs when we have thunderstorms or when the neighborhood sets off fire works and nothing worked until I used calm and comfort chews, 1 pill calms both my dogs (minpin daschund mix) and my (chihuahua daschund mixed) for hours until it passes. I recommend this product to anyone who has dogs with fears to loud noises.
