The Value of Science

We often say, our products are based on science and data, or everything we do is backed by science, but what does that really mean? It sounds important but it can be hard to relate science and data directly to a pet that is suffering from joint discomfort or a rescue dog who is paralyzed by stress. Science is the heart of what we do, and we never lose sight of the goal of learning for the benefit of pets. Our focus as a company, and the motto that we live by, is “Do what is right for animals and do what is right for our customers.” This motto helps us decide on every research project we undertake.

How Science has Shaped ElleVet Products

Back in 2016 we had what we thought was a great product, but we didn’t know for sure. We spent a year talking to experts in biochemistry, in CBD, in chemistry and to expert growers. We used the information to determine the exact strains of hemp we wanted to use, the formula for our product, and the extraction method. Our careful research allowed us to decide to use 50% CBDA right from the beginning. We were the only company to do this, and now, 5 years later, we have done even more research proving how important that decision was and proving the benefits of CBDA in pets.

Science at Work

Using our specific strain and 50% CBDA made our first clinical trial with Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine an incredible success. To put that a different way, all the dogs in this trial were very old with severe joint discomfort. Several were euthanasia candidates, and this trial was the last ditch effort to help them. Over 80% of these dogs had a dramatic improvement, and one of dogs who was scheduled for euthanasia before the trial lived another 2 years with a great quality of life. That is science at work!

No other company has been able to achieve the success that we have, and to date, no other company has had a successful clinical trial.

Why Dosing is so Important.

Science has also been the reason for our accurate dosing, so let’s talk about dosing.
To put this in perspective, ¼ an aspirin will not help your headache, but an accurate dose will give you relief. The same goes for hemp- the right dose of CBD is needed to help your pet. ElleVet has conducted multiple pharmacokinetic studies and these studies help us learn how different species metabolize our CBD and CBDA, how long it stays in their body and how it is absorbed. With this information, we have been able to determine the best dose for different issues. We know that twice a day dosing is essential for the best effect, and that cats require a higher dose that dogs do. We know that itching and stress require a higher dose than joint discomfort. This knowledge also helped us to create our Calm and Comfort situational use chews for urgent or high stress situations, and that has helped dogs who experience traumatic levels of stress during thunderstorms or veterinary visits, or separation.

Our Ongoing Research & The Future of CBD + CBDA

We currently have 30 different research projects ongoing, in many different areas, and all of them are laser focused on creating new products to help pets, understanding the endocannabinoid system, and learning more about the lesser-known cannabinoids and how they can help pets in different ways. It’s exciting to be at the forefront of a developing industry and we are proud to have led the way in scientific advances. We have been able to partner with Cornell, University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine, Washington State, and many other respected institutions so we can share our knowledge and learn from the best. Together with many of the best veterinarians in the country we are raising the bar on CBD + CBDA products, helping hundreds of thousands of pets, and making the world a better place for animals.
